VerflaagDe terracotta replica's zijn op basis van een foto van het originele Atlas beeld beschilderd. Michael Thornley, de maker van de replica terracotta's, gebruikte hiervoor de volgende pigmenten en technieken.
1. Based colour foundation (Daler Rowney) Acrylic Cadmium Red (501).
2. Apply over aspects of the body with water colour pigment (Daler Rowney) Cadmium Red (571) and water colour pigment (Daler Rowney) Burnt Sienna (221).
3. Apply in a splattering effect masking fluid (comes in a liquid form but solidifies on body when hardened)
4. Apply wash effect with white Matt paint (Dulux or any good wall paints) before it dries lightly rub back to reveal in places the base foundation red underneath with soft sponge. Also rub off the masking fluid to reveal the base colour red.
5. Discolour the white wash effect with water colour pigment (Daler Rowney) Yellow Ochre (663) dusting it on very lightly with a soft brush and immediately rubbing with a soft sponge, in differing depths depending on the original discolouration.
6. Finish off the discolouration effects with the blackening of the water colour pigment (Daler Rowney) Ray Umber in the same method as of application, dusting it on very lightly with a soft brush and immediately rubbing with a soft sponge, in differing depths depending on the original discolouration. This final application will give the impression of the ageing blackening grime.
